Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Jamboree cost?

The Northeast Georgia Council Jamboree fee for 2005 is $1500-- but the fee is "all inclusive."  It  includes bus transportation to and from the Jamboree, a 2-night hotel stay in Washington, DC, admittance to Busch Gardens, all meals before, during and after the Jamboree and all activity fees, as well as a special duffel bag, t-shirts and patches for your uniforms-- even the special patrol and troop gear we'll need to buy for the trip.  Scouts will want to bring their own spending money for souvenirs and snacks, and will also need to purchase one additional uniform, and if needed, some camping gear for the trip.

And yes, we accept MasterCard and Visa for individual payments, and no, you do not have to pay all at once.  And Moms and Dads, we encourage the boys to earn at least part, if not all, of their way to the Jamboree.

What are the eligibility requirements?

You must be 12 years old and a First Class Scout by July 1, 2005.  However-- we would caution Scouts and parents that Scouts will be away from home for almost two weeks, and that "junior" Scouts that have minimal summer camp experience or away from home experience will in all likelihood experience homesickness.  We recommend (but do not require) boys be at least 13 and more experienced Scouts.

All applicants are subject to the approval of their Scoutmaster and the Northeast Georgia Council.  Applications are processes on a first-come, first-served basis.

What's the Jamboree all about, anyway?

It's really hard to describe-- but it's not like any other Scouting experience you'll ever have.  It's about meeting people from all over America and all over the world.  It's about hearing a message specific to Scouts from the President of the United States.

It's about getting to learn more about Scouting as a world-wide movement and meeting people from all over the world.  It's about learning the higher meaning of service and devotion.  And it's about having FUN!

Can you describe the itinerary?

We will leave by bus on Friday night, July 22 and drive all night to Williamsburg, Virginia.  You will spend all day Saturday on your own (with a buddy) at Busch Gardens, then after a supper at Busch Gardens, drive to Washington, DC Saturday evening.

Sunday we will have a Scout worship service, then spend all day in the capital "tourist" area of central Washington ("The Mall"), where Scouts will be with a buddy-- a great place to see the sights and to meet Scouts from all over America.  That evening we will have dinner at a nice restaurant, then back to the hotel.

Monday through the following Wednesday (10 days) we will be at the Jamboree!   More activities every day than you can possibly imagine-- military units and displays, shows, scuba diving, merit badge midway, amateur radio, Venturing, fishing.... well, you get the idea.  Every morning breakfast with your patrols, then you and your friends are free until dinner.

Two "Arena" shows are staged-- opening and closing-- where we all get together on a huge hillside for an evening of great program.

On Wednesday, August 3, we will load our buses and head for home, arriving in late afternoon or early evening.

I'm listed as an "Alternate."  Will I still get to go?

The Northeast Georgia Council is allocated 108 youth positions, a total of three Jamboree Troops.  Experience these past many years has shown us that there will always be dropouts-- boys or families who have something unexpected crop up that would keep them from attending the Jamboree.

Because of that, we always designate up to 12 "Alternates" for the Jamboree-- and in almost every case, most of our alternates generally get to go.  No guarantees of course, which is why we tell everyone to "Sign up early!"

What equipment will we need to buy?

Your Jamboree Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters will have the details for you.  We understand that families are on tight budgets and we'll work with you.  Main equipment, such as tents, dining canopies and other patrol camping gear are provided by the Northeast Georgia Council and are a part of your Jamboree fee.

I don't know anyone.  Is that a problem?

Nope!  Most guys that attend the Jamboree do so in order that they make new friends for life.  You will be with a patrol made up of other Scouts, with a Troop led by experienced and well-trained adult leaders.  And there's so much to see and do, you won't have any problems making new friends.  (Hey- that's what the Jamboree is all about!)

How much money should I bring?

We recommend $100-$250 spending money for the entire trip to buy souvenirs and snacks.  (You actually won't need nearly that much)  But we DO recommend you bring a camera and lots of film to take pictures, pictures and more pictures.

How do I apply?

Download the application or call the Council Camping Department at 1.800.699.8806 and we'll send you one.  As soon as you've completed it (including approval by your Scoutmaster), mail it and a $100 refundable deposit to: 2005 Jamboree, NE GA Council, PO Box 399, Jefferson, GA 30549.  All applications are subject to the approval of your unit leaders and the Northeast Georgia Council.

See you at the Hill!
