Adult Leader Training
Adult Leader Training Opportunities
Adult Leaders in the Cherokee District have several opportunities for training, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of these learning tools. You can also see more at the Council website at:
http://www.nega-bsa.org/training.htm.
Online Learning: Scout Leaders can go through basic training online at any time, through the web portal at http://olc.scouting.org/. Adults need to set up a user account and password, following the directions on the site, and should include their BSA ID # (found on the membership card) to ensure that their training record is updated. These trainings are interactive and well done.
- All new leaders should start with "This is Scouting," available online.
- Next, they should complete “Cub Scout Leader Fast Start” or "Boy Scout Leader Fast Start" training, also available online.
- All adult leaders should also annually complete the online "Youth Protection Training"
Depending on what role the Adult Leader is registered in, the next set of training is Position-Specific:
- Cub Scout Leader Position Specific Training
- Tiger Den Leader Position Specific Training
- Den Leader Position Specific Training (for Wolf and Bear Den Leaders)
- Webelos Den Leader Training
- Cubmaster Training
- Pack Committee Member Training

- SM/ASM Position-Specific Training
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
None of the Position Specific Trainings are available online; Please see the links below for information on dates, times, and locations.
- Once an Adult Volunteer has completed This is Scouting, Fast Start, Position Specific Training, and Youth Protection, they are eligible to wear the Trained patch.

Outdoor Leader Skills
- BALOO
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation for Cub Scout leaders is a one-day training event that introduces participants to the skills needed to plan and conduct Pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping. This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack campout, and it is required that at least one adult per pack complete BALOO training in order to apply for tour permits. BALOO training is offered at University of Scouting. (See Suplemental Trainings Below)
- Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, the Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. Webelos den leaders should attend this training before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources.
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training
In addition to being offered via the "TNT" program at Camp Rainey Mountain during summer camp, Outdoor Leader Skills training is offered by the Cherokee District at least once per year. It includes all the outdoor and camping based skills that leaders need to be able to work with Scouts on Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. For Fall 2009, this will be offered at the Fall Camporee, Oct. 3-4, 2009 at CRM. Jeff Sturm (Troop 149) will coordinate the training; no additional fee beyond the regular Camporee fees is required. Contact District Executive Mike Kien with questions.

- Powder Horn (offered once every two years) This is a high adventure and Venturing leader outdoor training emphasizing what opportunities and resources are available for various high adventure activities.
- University of Scouting is a one day training event that offers the opportunity to take several supplemental training classes on a variety of topics. This training day typically takes place the first weekend in December.
- At the Cherokee District Advance-A-Ramas, we plan to offer one-hour breakout training sessions for Boy Scout Adult Leaders. These will vary but are expected to include:
- Understanding the District Eagle Advancement Procedures
